Omnisat are using the
Worldspace satellite radio to provide a number of data
information services around Europe, one of which is
a weather service. MIDAS are providing the weather data,
which is sent to their system and broadcast as GRIB and JPEG files to all subscribers
via satellite radio. The big
benefits of satellite radio are that there are no data
communication charges, and no problems with being out
of mobile phone range.
Midas Weather worked with Omnisat to provide a specification for the set of GRIB and JPEG files required to provide coverage within the Worldspace satellite's coverage area. These are then automatically created on the Midas Weather server, and pushed out to the Omnisat server via ftp, from where they are broadcast to their customers.
